The Positives and Negatives of Working From Home

Posted On Thursday, January 15 2009 at 01:04 PM

With all of the hype surrounding Work-At-Home, Work-From-Home, and Home-Based-Businesses, it makes you want to quit your job and try one out! Fortunately, reality kicks in which is why we all aren’t quitting our jobs. While Work-At-Home, Work-From-Home, and Home-Based Businesses aren’t for everyone, they are a great opportunity for some which is why both the positives and negative are listed below.

Positives

Freedom: The freedom to create your own schedule, stay at home with the children, take random vacation days.

Salary: You determine your salary level by the amount of time and effort you invest.

Tax Deductions: Because you “own your own business,” you gain the ability to increase your number of write-offs.

Negatives

Freedom: At first, you are at the full disposal of your business. Overtime is very common for individuals starting out and maintenance of accounts and peoples requires both time and effort. Not making yourself available could result in a loss of profit and loss of clientele.

Salary: Income isn’t a guarantee. Multiple factors play into the success of your business, most of which are uncontrollable such as the economy, demographic, demand for your product or service.

Benefits: Because you are considered self-employed, any medical and dental bills must come out-of-pocket.

Boundaries: There is not official boundary between your work life and your personal life. So when you want to work you find yourself dealing with personal issues and when you need to deal with personal issues you find yourself working.

Secluded: Working from home often secludes you from the world. You miss out on office chatter, hanging out with co-workers after work, even company outings!

Work Load: In an office, a workload is often distributed amongst employees. The marketing department is in charge of marketing, the sales department is in charge of sales, etc. When you own your own business, you are in charge of it all, sales, marketing, accounting, everything!
