How Your Career Path will Affect Future Job Opportunities
Posted On Tuesday, January 13 2009 at 02:40 PM
How Your Career Path will Affect Future Job Opportunities What is the magic formula to a successful career, and how to achieve such a goal? This is the immanent question that keeps many from achieving success. As to any complex multi-dimensional problem, where to start!
First, it is very important to have clear and realistic goals of what you want to accomplish or attain. You are responsible for your career, no one else is, which means choose your career wisely. Be sure that your chosen career is of interest and that it will financially support your lifestyle. Once you embark on your career path it is important to keep in mind that any major career changes especially changing industries may be very taxing and will most likely set your career back especially financially.
When choosing a career it is important to be honest with yourself in terms of your strengths and weaknesses. Choosing a career path that is unattainable will ultimately result in a career disaster so it is important to understand the fine line between challenging career goals and unattainable goals. Never be discouraged from the idea of pursuing challenging goals, although if you so choose to pursue the path least taken be sure to develop your plan to success through logical data and common sense.
In your path of career success it is very important to conduct yourself with honesty and integrity, always, at all times. You never know when a prior negative action will come back to haunt you. It is likely that colleagues, bosses and even friends of these individuals may be aware and/ or remember any negative experiences, which may result in lost career advancements. It is a small world, people talk and individuals working at some of your future target employers may know things about you that are not entirely positive, so be sure to conduct yourself on the highest level possible.
In most industries when choosing a career path you must stretch yourself; go beyond your comfort zone; take initiatives; take risks when warranted. In any event you may find failure, although by taking the challenge and accepting the risk you will always have better odds for success. In the event of failure be sure not to become discouraged, simply take what you have learned, apply the new found knowledge and continue driving to career success.
If you aren’t learning then you are not challenging yourself. In a position of limited or no intellectual growth, it is likely that you will fall behind while the world passes you by. Never stop learning; be curious and always be a good listener. Individuals aware of their surroundings and always willing to listen are most likely to find some amazing knowledge from even the least likely of sources.
Through your journey to career success be sure to enjoy and value others; treat them as you expect them to treat you. Success not only comes from the work or skills performed, it also comes from relationships developed while on the path to career success. Good relationships can not only open new opportunities and create alternative paths for future career growth, but through these professional relationships there are alternative opportunities for friendships and some circumstances even love.
One of the most important concepts to obtaining success is “don’t only work for money, money will come to you, if you are good at what you do.” This is very important because it is true. Through, strategic career planning, strong moral ethics, hard work and development of positive relationships with others, success will follow.
Career success not only takes place at work but it also takes place at home. Balancing work and family is most important. If work takes priority over family then the entire pilgrimage to career success intended to support a single person or a family entity becomes a failure. Always respect and be aware of balancing work and family. If for some reason work becomes out of control, take action by deriving a plan to create balance without developing career regression.
In any event it is better to look at things as cup half full versus half empty; be positive and optimistic. Success derives from many things, including optimism which is why most successful individuals maintain a positive outlook even through tough times. Lastly, let optimism bring good luck!
