Job Interview Basics

Posted On Monday, January 19 2009 at 09:31 AM

So you landed a job interview, hooray! Now, don't mess it up! Listed below is a list of what employers will be looking for, so read it, study it, remember it and practice it!

Job Interview Hint #1: Arrival Time

Employers will pay attention to what time you arrive to your job interview. Are you five minutes, ten minutes or fifteen minutes early, or, are you late! To be safe, make sure you arrive at least fifteen minutes early.

Job Interview Hint #2: Presentation

Employers will attention to what you wear to your job interview. Are you dressed in a mini skirt? Ripped jeans? Sneakers? Remember, it is better to be overdressed than underdressed!

Job Interview Hint #3: What You Are Selling

Employers will pay attention to what you say during a job interview. Are you selling yourself or your prestige? Employers already know what you’ve done and they type of experience you have. They want to know who you are and how you intend on contributing to their company. Don’t be modest, be honest!

Job Interview Hint #4: Knowledge of the Company

Employers will pay attention to what you know about their company during a job interview. They don’t want to hear about other companies, they want to hear about their own. It isn’t because they don’t know about their own company; it is more a test to make sure you did your homework! Why would you want to work for a company you know nothing about anyway? Most employers would assume desperation or sloppiness.

Job Interview Hint #5: Interest

Employers will pay attention to your interest level during a job interview. Do you ask about training programs? Do you ask about promotions? Do you ask about the company’s future goals? When applying for a job, it is important to know what you are getting into. Not only is this an opportunity, but it will score you brownie points!

Job Interview Hint #6: Listener v. Talker

Employers will pay attention to how much you talk during a job interview. Now, I realize you will have questions, we all do. Just keep in mind, it is more important that the employer gets a feel for who you are. If you have done your homework, you already know you want the job. The only way an employer can “research” you is through an interview.

Job Interview Hint #7: Preparedness

Employers will pay attention to what you bring to a job interview. Did you bring a pad of paper and a pen? I hope so! And, keep it simple. Don’t bring a bright pink pad of paper with little fringes, although cute, not professional!

Job Interview Hint #8: Answers

Employers will pay attention to how you answer their questions during a job interview. It is best to keep your answers clear and succinct. In other words, say a lot but in a little.

Job Interview Hint #9: Negativity

Employers will pay attention to what you say during a job interview. If they ask about your previous employer and you immediately spit out negative information, it won’t look good. Try using phrases such as, “I am just looking for a better opportunity,” or, “The position wasn’t challenging me.”

Job Interview Hint #10: Maturity

At the end of your interview, the employer tells you that you aren’t a good fit, how do you handle it? You can say one of two things: a) “Thank you for your time and keep me in mind if something comes up where I would be a great fit,” or b) “You jerk! You will regret not hiring me!” Now keep in mind, just because you weren’t hired today, doesn’t mean they won’t have a position for you at a later date! Build your network, don’t burn a bridge!

Well Done! I normally have a lot of input although this article defines the perfect interview. Even some of the most well rounded intelligent individuals don't always have the necessary structure and experience to offer a strong presentation during an interview. Smart job seekers usually prepare and sharpen their skills by reading online publications and practicing at home before going to a live interview, although most just show up and hope they have the skills and personality.
