Types of Job Interview Questions

We all know that during a job interview dozens of questions are asked. Some questions we like, other questions we don't, and some, we don't even understand. So what exactly is the purpose for so many questions and why are they necessary?
Interview questions can be divided into several categories, all of which serve an individual purpose. Listed below are the most common types of job interview questions and why they are import.
Job Interview Questions Category #1: Credential
Credential job interview questions are meant to uncover and verify your educational experience, certification certificates, or participation in training programs.
Examples: "Where did you go to school?" "When did you graduate?" "What training have you received?" "What was your GPA?"
Job Interview Questions Category #2: Experience
Experience job interview questions are meant to uncover any relevant job experience.
Examples: "Have you ever worked with C ?" "Have you ever had a management role?" "What were your responsibilities at your last job?"
Job Interview Questions Category #3: Competency
Competency job interview questions combine knowledge, skills and behavior. That test not only that you know what you claim you know, but you understand and can apply it as well.
Examples: These questions are usually situational or case questions. "What would you do if _________?" "Why did you choose to ________?" "What happens when you combine _________ with _________?"
Job Interview Questions Category #4: Behavioral
Behavioral job interview questions look to uncover how you handle and react to certain situations.
Examples: "Describe a typical work day." "Within the past year, what was the most stressful even that happened to you and how did you handle it?" "Have you ever been in disagreement with a co-worker? What did you do about it?"
Job Interview Questions Category #5: Cultural Fit
Cultural fit job interview questions are meant to test the candidate's ability to fit in and work well in the company's environment.
Examples: "Do you prefer large groups or small groups?" "Have you ever worked from home before?" "Do you mind coming to work dressed in a suit and tie everyday?"
Job Interview Questions Category #7: Dumb
First of all, there is no such thing as a dumb question! If your employer asks you a question you perceive to be dumb, beware. Most employers don't ask a question they already have a pre-determined answer to. And what if I told you that most candidates provide employers with the wrong answer to dumb questions? Yup, its true.
Examples: As much as I would love to give you a few examples, I can't. Perception varies from individual to individual. To one person, the above questions may be dumb but to another, they are very difficult.
